Good software, slow support

I bought Retrospect Backup for Windows and it works well for our small office. The setup was mostly straightforward, and it handled our daily backups without issue. I had a question about setting up NAS backup and it took about three days for customer support to get back to me. The pricing for the perpetual license was fair for what we got.

Reliable as always

This was my third time renewing Retrospect Annual Support and Maintenance for our Retrospect Single Server. The renewal process is always easy, and the software has been consistently reliable for years now. I've never had a major issue with backups failing or data loss, which is why I keep coming back. It's comforting to know our data is protected, and they've maintained the quality.

Decent price for basic backup

I was looking for something affordable to protect my data and found Retrospect Desktop. I got it during a sale, which was a good saving. It does what it says, keeps my files safe. Setting it up wasn't too hard, and I feel like I got good value for the money I spent.

Works fine for home

I got Retrospect Solo for my home computer. It was pretty easy to install and set up my first backup. Didn't have any trouble getting it to work, which is good since I'm not super techy. It backs up my photos and documents like it should.

Smooth upgrade, good features

I upgraded my Retrospect Backup for Mac license to include the Multi Server option recently. The upgrade process through their website was smooth; I just entered my existing license key and the system applied the upgrade pricing automatically. I also added Retrospect Cloud Storage this time around. The software itself is robust, offering good ransomware protection features. Configuring the cloud storage took a bit of reading through their documentation, but it integrated fine. I appreciated the clear instructions for managing multiple servers from one console.

Thinking about getting Retrospect for my small office, but not sure if I should go with Solo or Desktop. What's the main difference between those two licenses?

G Gwen Carter 2 months ago
Solo is basically for one machine, like if you just need to back up your own workstation. Desktop handles multiple client machines, so if you have a few computers in your office you'd want Desktop.

Yeah, if you're talking about an office with more than just your personal machine, Desktop is definitely the way to go. Solo is pretty limited.

How does Retrospect stack up against Veeam for a small business? We're talking like 10-15 endpoints and a couple of virtual servers.

D Derek 2 months ago
For that size, Retrospect can be a bit simpler to set up and manage, especially if you're not super deep into virtualization. Veeam can feel a bit overkill for smaller setups.

I used both. Veeam is super powerful but has a steeper learning curve and can get expensive quickly. Retrospect is more straightforward for general file/server backup and usually more affordable for SMBs. If your virtual server needs are complex, Veeam might be better, but for typical SMB, Retrospect holds its own.

Is there usually a Black Friday deal for Retrospect? Don't want to buy now if I can save a bunch in a month or two.

G Greg Carter 2 months ago
They usually have something for Black Friday/Cyber Monday, yeah. It's usually a percentage off for new licenses or upgrades. Might be worth waiting.

Definitely wait. Most software companies do some kind of holiday sale, Retrospect is no exception. Seen good deals from them around then.

Does Retrospect actually work with tape drives? I have some older LTO stuff I'd like to integrate if possible for archiving.

N Noor 2 months ago
I'm pretty sure it does. I remember seeing tape support listed somewhere in their features, a buddy of mine uses it with an older tape library.

Yep, it totally does. They've had tape support for ages, it's one of their strong points for traditional backup setups.
